Pollyanna began in 1967 when Rita Britton aged 23 realised her days working at the local paper mill were numbered. "I rang up Ossie Clark from a call box at the end of my Gran's road and he agreed that I could buy from him when i was set up". So with 500 savings and a loan from her lorry driver father, she set up the first boutique, in a dank basement with blacked out windows and flock wallpaper it was an instant success.
Since then, Pollyanna is now in its fifth location, a four floor Georgian Townhouse with state-of-the-art interior on Market Hill in Barnsley - it also includes a fabulous restaurant/cafe recently featured in the Yorkshire Post, which has a friendly welcoming atmosphere second to none, not to mention the irresistable menu. It is the oldest of the few remaining independent fashion retailers in Britain having been in business for 40 years and has been hailed as one of the leading shops in the world by London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
Today, Pollyanna remains at the fore-front of designer wear retailing for men and women by offering a shopping experience which is unique, up market and covetable in three main areas.
Style: Pollyanna is constantly moving forwards in terms of fashion's ever changing silhouette and the increasing demand for diversity in style but its look is always kept distinct. It is this look, which is achieved through a remarkable finesse for product selection that works with the ethos of the company and its clients, and its architect Rita Britton which have ensured Pollyanna's long lasting and ever growing popularity. Pollyanna was among the very first stores in the UK to stock Comme des Garcons, Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, Carpe Diem, and Adam Kimmel and is the only store in the UK to stock Paul Harnden Shoemakers. Our very own label Nomad, which is incredibly popular for its impressive uncomplicated designs and modest price tag, is exclusively available to online customers. In store, additional lines from Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Forme Dexpression, Dries van Noten and Rick Owens ensure the store is cherished as a one-stop shop by fans of austere modernism.
Presentation: Pollyanna is over 4 levels each with a unique feel and merchandised with collections that work with each other and with the space they are in. The company prides itself on being run to a non-exclusive ethos which is one of the core factors to the distinctive shopping experience we offer. We do not exclude anyone from the Pollyanna experience whether they are looking for a signature outfit or having tea and crumpets in our Caf.
Customer Service: Customer service at Pollyanna means employing stylists to work on the shop floor to develop relationships with clients, providing online shopping with worldwide distribution, buying collections using comprehensive customer profiles, opening the store to accommodate clients working hours, staging sale days in locations all over the UK and making home visits to clients in a custom built Mercedes van.
