It was almost inevitable that fashion would flow in Dries Van Noten’s veins: his father owned a menswear shop and his grandfather was a tailor. He graduated from the Antwerp Fashion Academy in 1980. The brand does not offer haute couture; all of its designs are ready to wear. Van Noten’s use of prints (often ethnic), colours, original fabrics and layering has earned him a faithful following, despite the fact he does not advertise. In 2005, the New York Times described him as "one of fashion's most cerebral designers”, and he was recently awarded the International Award of the Council of Fashion Designers of America 2008.
