Rick Owens lives and
works out of Paris.
Originally from
Southern
California, his
aesthetic was
shaped by black and
white Hollywood
movies and the
rawness of the
decayed end of
Hollywood
Boulevard. Parsons
in LA was followed by
a course in
pattern- making.
He then toiled as an
indie designer in LA
before winning the
CFDA Perry Ellis
Award for Emerging
Talent in 2002.
In 2005 he introduced a furniture collection, using raw plywood, resin, fiberglass, cashmere and marble. Brancusi and Californian skate parks were among his influences. He was awarded the Cooper-Hewitt National Design award for Fashion design and the Rule Breakers award from the Fashion Group International, in 2007. Signature looks include architectural jackets and bias-cuts that wrap around the body in sombre tones. The same motif is translated into the Rick Owens DRKSHDW Label, but reworked in denim and jersey.
